invalid hostname

Hello,
I have a question concerning what actually determines the hostname. Here is my question, I am running RH8.0 and during the install I gave my workstation a hostname of blahblah (not really blahblah, but it'll work for my question), ok everything is fine and dandy until I reboot, once I reboot I get something akin to a MAC address (there was actually 9 duets xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx), I could goto a console prompt and set the hostname to blahblah and when I logged into gnome it would reflect blahblah (however, when I checked what the hostname was using set, it showed up as the 9 duets again). I verified in the /etc/hosts file that the hostname was set correctly (it was), and rebooted, again with the duets, I finally got the hostname blahblah to stick by going through the network gui off of the system settings. So my question is what does the system settings portion update to make this change????

thanks

Try setting it in /etc/sysconfig/network
