Although it may be a bit more than what you need, I would recommend installing a box with firewall software on board. It is definitely noe the only way. In my case I have Smoothwall Express 3.0 running on a Compaq Proliant server all of the traffic in and out gets logged as well as bandwidth meters show you who is using the network bandwidth in real time.
It was easy to download and setup.
Download from http://www.smoothwall.org.
Hope this helps.
