hi [people,

i am try to get my linux laptop to talk with anything else. currently we are using the trendnet TEW-PC16 card from www.trendware.com. we're using Rhat 7.2.

i think we've tried everything. we know the card work well with XP so we know we know they are not busted. we have configured our box so that the cards are recognised wlan0.
Cardctl is able to load and eject the card and identify it
Of the two beeps we receive when we load the card we get a bonk for the second beep (which is not a good sign, since it means our machine has not been able to identify the card). We have tweaked and played with the wireless.opts and network.opts file everywhere but it is of no use.

When we use iwconfig wlan0, we get No such device
when we use just iwconfig, we get nothing

any suggestions or pitfalls can be appreciated. please note we have followed instructions from every major site out there.

If you can, would you post the output of 'dmesg' upon card insertion. Also, have you actually located any of the external driver packages for this card, or are you just running with stock RH 7.2? Also, what's the output of 'lsmod' after the card is inserted?

Here is the information you asked for.

Card control still works (we can eject and insert the card). We are still getting the bleep, blonk combination. At one point we were able to insert the card and the OS recongnized that we had inserted the card (still bleep, blonk).

Unfortunately, since then we updated the following rpm: modutils-2.4.13-0.7.1.i386.rpm. And now we're some getting some error messages when we do "cardctl insert". Here is what were are seeing:

As far as external driver packages, we're using linux-wlan-ng-0.1.10

The reason you're not getting a response from iwconfig is that the goobers at the linux-wlan project haven't built their drivers with wireless extensions in the /proc directory.

It seems that you're running a stock kernel RedHat 7.2. There is a different set of drivers that works with this card that you probably had as part of the default install: the orinoco package. Just look through /lib/modules/2.4.7-10/pcmcia and see of there are a stack called hermes.o, orinoco.o, and orinoco_cs.o I'm pretty certain there is, but I haven't installed 7.2 on a laptop in a while.

If they're there, you'll need a script to bind the card to the drivers. You can find that at this page, about halfway down, its called hermes.conf. If you copy that into your /etc/pcmcia directory and re-insert the card, that might work.

As far as drivers from linux-wlan go, I've gotten them to work on 3 different machines: 2 laptops and a desktop, under Slackware and RedHat, but only after at leaswt 8-20 compiles with varying options over different versions.

PrismII card support : Not yet fully functional. Most PrismII cards should work in some form or fashion. Ad-Hoc demo mode, IBSS Ad-Hoc mode and bit rate setting have been seen to work on a D-Link card. Encryption is quite broken, sometime a tcpdump manages to make it work. Note that PrismII firmwares seems to be not as good in general, for example they don't support Multicast...

We looked in the folder /lib/modules/2.4.7-10/pcmcia and the following files were not present hermes.o, orinoco.o, and orinoco_cs.o. Ofcourse we then wen to the following page:

http://ozlabs.org/people/dgibson/dldwd/

and downloaded the latest orinoco source files. I presume the .c and .h compile to .o files. Unfortunately we got an error whilst compiliing the file....the error had to do with 'len' in some file.

That's odd, I helped a guy today front to back with a RedHat 7.2 laptop base install, no frills, who had the orinoco drivers on his machine. Try to find anything named orinoco by running a straight locate.
Here's the other thread from today.

I've only ever gotten the source for the orinoco modules to compile on one distrobution: LFS, so that's not really an option. I've tried every current distro... I won't go into why.

Honsetly, try downloading the hermes.conf script and just putting it in /etc/pcmcia.

Ok finegan i've got a clean machine here. I loaded RHAT 7.2 with 'everything' including i guess the base laptop stuff.

As expected an iwconfig only gave me the lo interface and there was nothing significant about ifconfig either.

lsmod showed only pcmcia_core but no other *_cs stuff.

i guess orinoco might not be in this machine....but then a locate orinico gave me orinoco in the following files:

I left these files as they were ( i presume you will want me to do something with then in your reply)

I then copied hermes.conf.txt into /etc/pcmcia and ran it (by double clicking) / it seemed to do nothing since my iwconfig and ifconfig showed nothing new.

However, when i yanked out card and put it back in the laptop did give me a bleep, blonk combination (hence i guess the card is not being recognised but its presence is being detected)

I opened up the KDE control centre and under PCMCIA both my slots show up as empty.

As a test i put a 3comEtherlink III PCMCIA ethernet card into one of my slots (the other slot has the TEW-PC16 in it) and i got
- 2 beeps
- KDE control centre saw the 3Com 589 Ethernet
- lsmod had an additional module 3c589_cs
- ifconfig gave me two interfaces [lo and eth0]
- iwconfig did not change (as expected i guess since this card is not wirless)

i also did a locate for wlan0, eth1 and wvlan and this is what i got:

- no instance of wlan0

- three instances of eth1:

my buddy here still suspects that TEW-PC16 card uses linux-wlan-ng and not orinoco drivers...how can i put his mind at rest?

The cardmgr will mis-identify the card as an old lucent card, hence it trying to bind it to wvlan_cs. The orinoco modules are there and in the correct place.

/etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf doesn't need to be activated, its just a text file that cardmgr reads in order to figure out what card goes with what module. Actually, there is another file in there, differing per pcmcia version that is telling cardmgr to read everything in that directory that has a .conf as the ending. Yours has a .txt ending, hence why cardmgr isn't sourcing it. Fix it with:

mv /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf.txt /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf

Then call a pcmcia restart with:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart

With that you should get the matching beeps and three modules should appear in lsmod: orinoco, orinoco_cs, and hermes

We followed your instructions and we are getting the same result. We also noticed the followin (which is not good):

when we eject the card we only get 1 beep, when we insert the card we only get on bonk. In hindsight we WERE only getting one beep on ejection and 1 bonk on insertion.......although we know we should be getting two!

We suspect the system is not working due one of the following reasons:
- no wireless tools (is this included in the linux-wvlan-ng?)
- do we have to define wlan0 somewhere?
- is something wrong with our pcmcia_cs module?

Okay, time for some hard-core debugging. After card insertion, check "lsmod" and "dmesg". The first will show what modules are loaded while the second will show the kernel detecting hardware. What sort of initialization failure did it get from card insertion?

No wireless tools is odd, but its one RPM on just one of the RedHat CDs. Its named, surprised, wireless_tools.20(?).rpm or somesuch.

You don't have to define wlan0, and actually if you get the orinoco drivers to work they use the correct denotation and will list it as an eth device, probably eth0. You'll watch and see in "dmesg" the kernel either succeeding or failing at initializing the card as "eth?"

No, I think pcmcia is fine, this new in-kernel stuff is a little screwy, but it works.

Its kind of hard to diagnose weirdness from this side, but is that dmesg inclusive of having the wireless card inserted because there's no information on it at all in there. I understand you probably had to have the 3com card in the machine in order to post here at all, but the dmesg output from the wireless card insertion is where all the important info is.

Also, that lsmod doesn't have the 3com card listed so are there no cards in when that was snapshotted?

the 3com card was inserted just to check if the computer recognises it and it did.

The wireless card was the only one in when we ran lsmod and dmesg. It looks like the OS updates lsmod and dmesg when we put the 3COm card in but doesnt do the same for the wireless card.

I still dont see any instance of card services....although cardctl identifies the wireless card as "Product info: PCMCIA " , "11M WLAN Card v2.5" , "ISL37300P", "RevA"

Okay, first off what exactly is the make and model of this prism2 card?

If its something new or oddball, you might just have to create an entry for it in hermes.conf in order to get it to bind right. There is a file that holds the identification of cards that are currently inserted... its different per distro and I can't remember exactly where it is on RedHat, its under /var/, and I think /var/run/pcmcia/stab. The information in stab is what you'll need.

I ddn't think this was going to get this hinky.

Hi!

Making an entry is what I thought of when I saw the hermes.conf file. We are using a Prism2 based pcmcia wireless card manufactured by 'Trendware- TEW - PC16'.

I also checked the /stab file and there are no decvices listed when we insert the wireless card. Although the OS recognizes the 3COM card in the /var/lib/stab file.

In making the entry should I quote the respose of

cardctl ident : which is

"Product info: PCMCIA " , "11M WLAN Card v2.5" , "ISL37300P", "RevA"
manfid: 0x0274, 0x1612
function: 6"

create a record based on it's Trendware origin.
