Internet works on Linux but not Windows

hi guys, this is my first post, so apologies for my ignorance. i have an old laptop running linuxmint beautifully. i also have a desktop and newer laptop running win7 64bit. i ran into problems with my old adsl modem where my internet suddenly died on both the windows machines; neither wireless nor direct connection to the modem work. i called my internet provider (teksavvy) and they stated that the modem i have is too old and i needed to buy a new one, which is fine, a new tp-link modem is on its way. the strange thing is, a direct connection from the old modem to my old linuxmint laptop works perfectly!! does anyone have any ideas why this is?? any info or even speculation is much appreciated!

ps. i tried to google this issue and couldn't find anything useful.

You could try a "traceroute [some domain/ip address]" ("tracert" on Windows) to find where the connection times out.

How is the modem handing out your connection? Static IP? NAT on Private LAN? Did you have a router after your modem?
Do an "ifconfig" command to find out what IP you have on your linux machine, wether it's Public or Private. Then make sure that your Windows machines are set to DHCP, or automatic configuration. Then we can go from there.
