there is no setup, it's just an ethernet connection, just plug into it and it will start working. it really is as simple as that. a few things i experienced is that they'll only allow a certain number of mac addresses within a certain time period. don't chop and change things around too much. also if you've *never* used this connection before then you *might* need to ring them to activate it or something, you may have a cd to run which does some nominal one off registration, but it only ran on windows when i had anything to do with them as NTL.
Has he just been connected to broadband? If yes, unfortuantely you can't register (activate) the modem using Linux. He will need to use the BroadConnect software (which means using Winblow$) to register the modem. Once registration is complete he will be able to use the modem with Linux. Which distro will he be running? just in case the above is not the problem.
no he hasn't just registered. he was registered with them way before the changeover to virgin media. but ive not really done cable modem setups so this baffled me.
last time i moved house, an NTL engineer gave me that bloody cd and said i'd need to use it. I said i couldn't, so he called someone and got it working for me within 5 minutes... never once did i *ever* have to use those silly user numbers and passwords that NTL gave me. never.

I follow mainly ADSL because its easier.
BlackFish
easier??? good god no, it *really* isn't easier. there really could be no easier internet connection than CABLE, no username, no password nothing. just a real pretty lookin' ethernet socket. lovely.
