Internet thro another computer

Help. im trying to connect to the internet on from my laptop, running Vectorlinux 5.1 standard, thro my mothers which runs on xp. im using a crossover cable and have the 2 plugged in and turned on. thats as far as i can get tho. the laptop with windows recognises that there is network connection but claims "limited or no connectivity". any ideas?

Your signature is spelled wrong.

You need to use the Internet Connection Sharing wizard on the Windows machine to set it up, then set the XP machines IP as the gateway etc on the linux machine and you should be good to go.
