Internet speed is 50 times slower on Linux than on Windows
 

I'm using the same PC to use SLED10 and Windows XP. On SLED, the internet is ridiculously slow. On Windows, it's fine.

There is one difference between the way I connect to the internet with Linux: I plug it straight into the wireless modem/router. This is because Linux won't recognise my wireless network card (I've posted a question about that here). On Windows, I don't use the wire, I connect wirelessly.

I'm pretty sure, however, that the router would not serve up a dramatically slower broadband speed just because the computer is wired in rather than wirelessly connected. It seems a bit odd.

Any ideas?

BTW, the broadband modem/router I am using is a Dynamode R-ADSL-C4W-EG.

And, as I mentioned, I'm using SLED10.

Please note I am a complete beginner with Linux.

If you are using Firefox, have you disabled IPv6? There is a known issue where IPv6 grinds very slowly.

First, unless you're using the superG, MIMO or other recent wireless technology wired should be faster. When this happened to me I found the solution to be rather simple. Your DNS server addresses are in a file called resolv.conf. Mine, with Slackware, is in my /etc directory. I don't know if it's the same in SLED. After you find it open it with a text editor and see if there's a line at the top that reads something like, search yournetwork. (yournetwork would be the name of your home network) Below that would be the IP addresses of your provider's DNS servers. If it's like that remove the top line leaving only the lines with the IP addresses. Note: you may need root permission to edit the file.
