internet slow (certain sites) but IPv6 disabled

Recently, certain sites (ebay,cnn, google groups search) will not load in firefox 1.0, mozilla or konquerer, while others are fine. In Fedora core 2 with Kernel 2.6.8-1.521, I have added the following to /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modules.conf

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

and the following to /etc/sysctl.conf

net.ipv4.tcp_moderate_rcvbuf=0
net.ipv4.tcp_default_win_scale=0

to turn off IPv6, and everything was fine (internet was fast) for many months.

The behavior started after installing some recent updates, including:

xpdf-3.00-3.4.i386.hdr
redhat-artwork-0.96-2.i386.hdr
openoffice.org-i18n-1.1.2-10.fc2.i386.hdr

cups-devel-1.1.20-11.6.i386.hdr

libxml2-devel-2.6.15-2.i386.rpm
libxml2-2.6.15-2.i386.rpm

I have reinstalled firefox and even deleted the /lib/..../ipv6 directory but ebay, cnn and google groups (after pressing search) are slow. please Help?

----------------------------------------

update: Konqueror and firefox appear to be able to browse cnn.com occasionally, and Konqueror will load only the main page at ebay, but querys will not resolve to a new page.

only gaim and a badly configured radius server would be able to disturbe intenet traffic. but that's (very!) unlikely as it affect only a few sides.
i rather think the modifications you made regarding ipv6 are the reason for this behavior. think about reverting these. are you sure your modules configuration is right?

ipv4 vs ipv6

Hi,

I am actually looking for ways to turn off ipv6 because I read other places that though it is going to be an Awesome setup when it gets into full swing there are alot of problems aka issues that may be brought up because ipv6 is relatively new.

The problem I am running into if anyone can shed some light or direct me to the correct thread is that Suse 9.1 is not letting me access the net, or more specifically I can ftp and ping but when I try to load a web page on Konqueror, Firefox, or Mozilla they all time out and dont connect...

Like my signature says... I am a newbie and am good at puttin my foot in my mouth... lol I do apreciate the help though .

build a kernel without ipv6 support or simply don't allow the ipv6-module to be loaded (modutils).
programs like bind have options to turn off ipv6. some programs don't even support it and some weired routing and tunneling in fact *need* ipv6. lot of them will tell you via logfiles (various under /var/log ) when they have a problem without ipv6, so commend out the ipv6 entries in your /etc/hosts to see if there are such on your sys. try to resolve a ipv6-address or contact your interfaces with a ipv6 aware netcat. i think a informal message about the not supported ipv6 protocol should be returned and/or printed to your logfiles.

i havn't taken a closer look on the advantages of ipv6 - iirc one is to raise the numbers of ipadr. avail. if you don't need the new stuff for network routing turn it off.
