Internet sharing through crossover cable


Hello
I know this one has been done to death and yet i am forced to ask again.

Aim : Internet sharing between Desktop and Laptop
Problem : Unable to ping either way

Desktop Fedora Core 4
Laptop Fedora Core 4

Desktop : 2 nics

eth0
192.168.11.54
gateway 192.168.11.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

eth1
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0

Laptop
eth0
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0

I have used this setup successfully before when i had FC3 on either comp. Now i am unable to ping to either system from the other. Nor can i ping to the ISP server from the desktop.

Desktop
$/sbin/route

192.168.11.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0

firewall is disabled and hence no rules in ptables

You say you cannot ping your ISP, how about pings to your gateway(192.168.11.1) from the desktop?
Make sure you can ping your interfaces from the localhosts just to be sure the TCP/IP stack is functioning.
Also I know it's dumb, but be sure that if you have them, that your link lights on the NIC's are on.

Hi
I should have made it clearer. By ISP server, I meant the gateway (192.168.11.1). Nope. I am unable to ping to the gateway either.
I made tcpdump listen on the desktop and tried pinging 192.168.0.1 from the laptop. It reports that all packets are dropped by filter and none by the kernel. Does that mean the filter table of iptables? If so what are the rules i must specify in iptables.
Pinging 192.168.11.54 and 192.168.0.1 from the desktop, and 192.168.0.2 from the laptop work.

Hi
Problem solved. Apparently i had interchanged the ip settings for eth0 and eth1
