It may be possible to correct the problem by adding

What kind of internet device and connection do you have...have you used the GUI in your distro to try to configure it yet?

Are you able to ping to an external address? From a terminal window

#ping 66.94.230.49

If ping fails

please post the output of

#netstat -nr
#/sbin/ifconfig -a
#/etc/resolv.conf

If ping was successful, try

#ping www.yahoo.com

If this ping fails, you may have name resolution problems which could mean
1. entries in /etc/resolv.conf are incorrect
2. your firewall (iptables) is blocking name resolution

to confirm your firweall is causing the problem

#/sbin/service iptables stop

and try to ping

#ping www.yahoo.com.

If this works, you will need to fine tune iptables to allow DNS traffic.
