internet/network connection problems

I've installed a network of 4 computers 1 running win xp, win 2000, win 98 se, and the fourth i just installed mandrake 8.2 which is the first linux machine i've had on this network. I have a linsys 4 port router through a cable modem , I had the router use DHCP to assign my ip's, but it wouldnt work with the linux machine, so i made it a static ip of 192.168.1.102, and the default gateway 192.168.1.1(my router) and it seems to connect to the internet now but because i could get google's main page up (with no grapics though) but when i try to search it times out. then i try to go to other sites and get unknown host. I've only got to google and yahoo few times and when it does it takes forever to load, but ussally gives me an unknown hostor timeout on server. when i try to ping the machine from one of the windowz machines one or two of the requests time out. the other two are sucessesful. what is going wrong? the linux machine is a Pentium 120Mhz 64mb ram

How reliable are your name servers? What is the output of ifconfig? Are you getting alot of errors?

Sounds like a network type mismatch... Maybe linux box connecting at 100MBs on a 10Mbps network? (This would be a failure of the network card's auto-detect). or Vice Versa.... Actually, probably vice versa. Otherwise, the rest of the network would suffer if you connected a 100mbps device.

Name servers? i was able to get the dhcp to work on the linux machine. The rest of the network is fine its not slow at all. when i try to access the router through a browser in linux by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, It asks me for the password but then after i enter it, it times out, The auto dectect on linux seemed to have worked and i know i have a 10/100mbps card in there.i can ping the other computers with no prob.
