Internet monitoring tools

We have a Windows 2000 network with a Mandrake 9.1 computer connected to the network. A consultant that set up our network wanted us to use the Linux box to monitor the network. He is no longer associated with us and it is now up to me to find a solution for certain problems and I am weak on Linux. I have looked at some software to monitor users access to the internet but it runs on the Windows server. WE are looking at a possible product that would run on Linux and allow us to monitor the internet access of our Windows clients. My boss wants it done inexpensively.

Any suggestions?
