Hi minil,

If u r able to ping to remote hosts from ur linux machine then that means the linux machine is able to reach the host (out of your network). There may be a lot of reasons for not being able to browse through your browser.
Do u have a firewall installed that filters outbound port 80 packets?
Did you try it with any other browser?
What is the exact message that you are getting when you try to open the site through your browser?

Regards,
SiLiCoN

Suse 9.2 to 9.3 switch lost internet!

I know... I should have upgraded instead of doing a new install... anyway...

I'm running the Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 mobo which has the Marvell 8001 chip (10/100/1000) Mbit on-board NIC.

Yast recognized and configured the following:
Giga-byte CK8S Ethernet Controller configured with DHCP.
Giga-byte Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller configured with DHCP.

/etc/hosts is:
#IP-Address Full-Qualified-Hostname Short-Hostname
127.0.0.1 localhost

#special IPv6 addresses
::1 localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopbackk
fe00::0 ipv6-localnet
ff00::0 ipv6-mcastprefix
ff00::1 ipv6-allnodes
ff00::2 ipv6-allrouters
ff02::3 ipv6-allhosts

192.168.0.5 mypc.site mypc (Note: I put this in myself when I discovered I had could not ping the satellite modem)

/etc/networks is:
loopback 127.0.0.1
link-local 129.254.0.0

My ISP is Direcway (satellite service). I connect my PC to the satellite modem.

It all worked fine under Suse 9.1. But does not work now.

I can ping localhost and mypc. I am able to ping the satellite modem & bring up the satellite modem's ROM web page (see note under /etc/hosts), but cannot pull in any websites. I even tried shutting off the firewall but that didn't work either.

The browser is set for "direct connection" (no proxies).

Can anyone tell me what I missed?

Question Suse 9.3 Internet Connection Insanity!

Ok... I don't know what the heck I did, but my Internet connection is now functioning again!

The last the thing I recalled doing was re-installing the operating system, letting the system configure the NIC on the mobo for DHCP, adding 127.0.0.1 as a DNS and another IP address that appeared out of the blue while I was beating the hell out of the configuration (still trying to figure that one out).

I am still baffled why I could not get a static address to work (it worked in Suse 9.1)
