Question Internet Connection Sharing with Redhat9

Having changed to a Linux-based server (my win 2k adv srv. os had an average uptime of 4 days, way to short) i need to share my USB DSL Connection (Btconnect UK)

Anyway - got the modem driver (get it www_flashtux_org as BT refuse to support linux )

- configured it and runs as ppp0

- set up IP masquerading and Ip forwarding as i saw on other posts on the forum.

- set up DHCP - all works no problems

now i have a problem when i try to access websites from my client pc's (both linux (suse, fedora) + win (xp,2000) ) -- for example if i type www_google_com i cannot connect (cannot find host error) -- while if i type in googles IP Address (216.239.59.104) i can connect and surf the web perfectly. On my server there is no such problem, the Internet functions perfectly

this happens with all websites, anyone got any ideas as to why? i think it may be due to BIND and DNS name resolving, but unfortunately i am a complete newbie when it comes to this - any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!!

P.S substitute "_" in the URL's for "." when reading as this forum doesnt allow me to post URLS's

Welcome to LQ.

What do you have set as the DNS server on the client machines? Are you using your ISPs dns servers?

My Linux RH Gateway is using the ISPs DNS servers for the internet connection (ppp0)

The rest of the computers on my private network (eth0) are all configured via DHCP, from what i gather DHCP should set all network parameters on the Client machines, it sets the IP address and gateway fine.

Hmm, having a closer look, the hostnames on my private network also do not work, i can also connect via IP Addr.

Thinking about it, In order for this to work, do i need to set up a DNS server on my gateway? so that my private network (and the internet) can use names instead of IP addresses?

if i access the internet from the gateway i can use names without a problem, so i presume the internet-side of my connection is working ok.

Update:

I got my internal network to work perfectly with hostnames and dynamic IP's (a rather stupid problem due to a mistake on my samba server conf file) so i can now access all my PC's without knowing their IP addresses.

but saying that the Internet STILL doesnt work! i can only access it via IP addresses, ive tried enabling WINS and all sorts of other things, but i cant get it to work! --- still trying though.....

Got it working!!!!!

i just set my dns server to be my ISP's DNS server, after reading about i think i was supposed to set up a caching dns server on my box which would do the hotname resolving, but i just couldnt get it to work, i just hope my little workaround doesnt pose any security threat
