Internet Connection Sharing... again


I know there are a ton of threads about this already, but...

I am trying to share an intenet connection on a small network in my home. I have a server running Mandrake 9.1. Using the internet connection sharing wizard made everything work until the first time the machine was rebooted. I installed the latest version of shorewall from the web site and configured it according to the documentation. I also found the following command on a forum (I don't remember where):

route add default device ppp0

Entering this command makes my internet connection sharing work, but the command has to be entered everytime I connect to the internet, and only after the connection is up.
Does anyone know how I can make this persistent?

I use Line Control Server to connect to the internet using a dial-up connection. It uses a script to bring up the connection, and I added the command to the script, but it prints an error on the screen about ppp0 doesn't exist. I am assuming the route command is being run before the ppp connection is completely up.

have you tried adding this to /etc/ppp/options

defaultroute

or you could put the route command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

etc/ppp/options does have defaultroute in it.

I typed in just route on the console to see what would happen and I discovered that there was already a default route pointing to eth0. I typed 'route delete default' and it was deleted and a new default route was created when I dialed up my ISP, and I was able to connect to the internet through my modem. However, when the machine is rebooted, the other default route pointing to eth0 is created again and I cannot connect to the internet without deleting it.

Here is what is listed when I type the route command:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.255 U 0 0 0 eth0
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
default server.workgroup 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0

It appears to me that either this default route does not need to be created at boot time or needs to be changed to ppp0. Is there any way of doing this, or is there a better solution?

try this out

add these lines to /etc/sysconfig/network


GATEWAY=0.0.0.0
GATEWAYDEV=ppp0
