I have a xp machine and linux box(Redhat 8.0) networked together and the xp machine is the server connecting to the internet. I can ping each computer no problem and even ping websites from each computer. But when I type in for e.g. google.com nothing comes up. Therefore this is a DNS problem. I got the dns numbers from my isp and put them in but i'm still having the problem. If i type in the websites ip address it goes to that site. but if i type in the name it won't go. Anywone have any suggestions.
If you can access the site via it's ip but not by name then, yes, your problem is related to DNS. You don't say how you specified your DNS servers, if you rebooted, what distribution you have etc. If you can provide this info we should be able to help.
Also, from one of your computers unable to resolve addresses, what happens if you simply put 66.102.9.99 into a ping request or browser address bar? That's an ip for google which should get something if there's physical connectivity.
Thanks rjwilmsi...after all the times I rebooted that computer today after I changed things I forgot to reboot after I put in the DNS IP numbers. Can't believe I did something that stupid. Thanks for everyone's help anyways.
