error 650? timeout? lay it on me..
ok, it's a troubleshooting methodology i'm using here, based on my experience, so bear with me - it may take a few posts to get this up and running, but i don't deal in shotty work, so let's do this thing!...
FIRST: post the EXACT error message as it appears in the popup box.
SECOND: who is provider?
THIRD: did you mean to say you've connected before? if so, for how long, and how long ago was this: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE SINCE THEN THAT MAY HAVE CHANGED *ANYTHING*.
FOURTH: have you upgraded or installed communications or media players on Windows machine, or really anything, including: games
(directX dlls can be changed by games, and may break bindings to adapters if your adapter is bound using the dll. directX is not just a game library, it *IS* the windows api, directly dealing w/ communications, device i/o and graphics/gui interface services - essentially it is the platform that windows c-code development is built against, so if it gets a change, it can have drastic effects thru windoze' super-monolithic architecture, thus knocking out things you like - network communications) (FYI)
FIFTH: provide the OS on your brother's box and wait for my next post.
SIXTH: i'll be on the boards a while, so i'll be checking 4 u'r post!

The details
- ISP is Madasafish.
- The problem is at the ISPs` end or the local exchange.
- The problem is acknowledged by Madasafish & they say they are attempting to sort it out.
- There is no pattern to the disconnections as far as I can see because the problem is not at our end of the connection.
Exact error readout
"Error 650: The computer you are trying to connect to is not responding to your request"
- As soon as we mention Error 650 to madsaafish they know what we mean.
I relise they PROBABLY little I can do about the situation but I would like to know what causes this error -even though there could be many possible causes.
p.s
We can see the local exchange from our house so I've got contact with there if needs be. According to BT (telecom co.) the exchange is not ADSL enabled and thus not available in the area! We only managed to find out the truth by asking a technician at the local exchange! I doubt this has anything to do with the 650 problem though.
oi oi!

btw there are 2 seporate problems here
1) The ADSL going down with error 650
2) Trying to connection our computers with one acting as a gateway.
sorry about that I should have said that in my posts since they where submitted so close together.

ok, ideas
looks like they haven't built you into the router correctly, to me. after your signal hits the dslam (exchange) it should be router throught the ATM cloud to the router at the ISP, then to the DNS. probably not patched thru to the router, or router not set correctly to interact with you.
do you use static or dynamic ip?
do you use pppoe (a client to activate your dsl connection) or dhcp ( always on - no client)?
if you are static you are probably dhcp.
if not, pobably pppoe, it's adjustable speed makes it configurable on the fly form the isp. this is the main 'negotiating' that happens when client tries to connect.
about exchange, most dsl providers are very disorganized due to its boom - the experts are fewer than what is necessary to handle the growth, so you get idiots in key facets of the industry, who may neglect to build you into their network ( sometimes they cancel your order for no reason at all, so don't be suprised if you hav more trouble.)
basically, they'll write out a trouble ticket to get it fixed: get the number of that work order and demand a way to track it, who to call, and get progress report and a definitive explanation of what the problem is. if there is anything i can do to help fix your end, let me know.
But, like you, my hands are tied. as stated above - the best bet is that they are having an issue with the router at the isp, itself -or- they having built your outbound circuit to the backbone, atm, and router, yet. quick schem:
U-><-line-><-dslam(telco)->*1<-backbone-><-atm->*2<-router-><-ip server-><-dns-><-Web
*1- where the outgoing build may not be done right
*2- where the router build may not be done right
becuz they won't give the backbone ip sets (obviously)
u cannot troubleshoot further yourself. sorry.
will discuss 2nd problem later when i get home, 9pm CST, i'll be on bbs, i'll be there to drop the new post.

Problem with ethernet configuration
I have the same problem as most of you. Weel i have a PC wth Windows ME installed and i am trying to install linux as the second operating system. I have done that succesfully except for the network configurartion. I use HP EN7201D-TX PCI 10/100 lan card which is connected to the cable modem. I tried configuring the ethernet card but i always end getting a ping on 127.0.0.1 and no other. I think i do not have the correct driver for the card. I always get the error as Delaying ethernet initialization and the the operation is failed.(Used netcfg, linuxconfig but no sucess)
HELP!!!!!!!!!
