Internet Config. Problems

I'm having trouble setting up my internet connection, first I believe that the nic is not found, its a onboard Nividia nForce MCP Network Adapter. When i run ifconfig I only get the loopback and not the eth0. That's my first problem after that I don't know what to do. I'm using a cable modem with auto DHCP. Please help.

Please post the output of /sbin/lspci -v, and /sbin/lsmod. One other note, has the cable modem been plugged into another nic recently? Most cable modems bind to the mac address of the nic they are plugged into. I've seen it take hours with the modem unplugged before the info gets dumped, I've also seen it take about ten minutes.
good luck.

Post your motherboard make an model number.

The lsmod listing shows Forcedeth is being loaded. Forcedeth is a Nvidia gigabit ethernet controller module. Do you have an alias in the /etc/modules.conf file?

You can try to manually configure the NIC just to see. Log in as root and type in the command:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Verify buy just typing in the command:
ifconfig eth0

I do have an alias in /etc/modules.conf; alias eth0 nvnet; but when i try and probe the module a error message appears saying the kernel is tainted.

Hi,

Don't worry that's only a warning message... You can continue your config: ifconfig...

It was the BIOS setting for plug n play devices that needed to be switched off in order for my eth0 to work under forcedeth
