Hi All,
I have Windows XP Pro and Linux Red Hat ver 9 on my system. I am connected to a server though LAN. Intenet connection to my pc is through LAN and XP pro works fine.
On Linux, I can connect to the server through htpp and ftp. I have put in IP, Gateway and DNS similar to what has been set on the XP system. However I cannot connect to the Intenet on Linux. Noticed that I am able to get on to the server through http and ftp , as in when i type my server ip in the browser (both http and ftp). I do get connected to the server. However, I cannot browse anything else. When I try to get on to any website the message is unable to resolve websitename.
I have set all values in the setup interface - using neat command.
Tried a lot to locate a similar post/solution - a link if it exists will also help me. I am new to Linux.
Hi zaphodiv,
The IP, gateway and DNS are exactly the same in Linux as its in my Xp Pro. I am able to ping DNS and Gateway from XP, but from linux, I cannot ping Gateway and DNS - Destination Unreachable, message. I remember clearly being able to ping the Gateway successfully in my earlier attempts to solve the issue.
Also I noticed that the MAC address in XP differs from that in Linux. I tried changing the mac address of Linux to match that of XP, but it does not allow me to do so.
Hi,
Skunk, my XP and Nix are on the same box; my server is not on DHCP - so i have a static ip assigned. so at any time my machine is on XP or nix connecting to the server using the assigned ip.
In the past I was able to ping my DNS, get connected to the server using http and ftp followed by servername and i could see the server homepage, however i could not access any website.
Currently a ping to DNS and gateway results in Network Unreachable.
I dont mind to start over again, may be that would allow this forum to guide me better. How do I use the settings (ip,DNS,Gateway etc) to work for my nix.
if its not already configured..add/edit ur ethernet configuration. Add ur IP, subnet (make this the same as your gateway subnet if gw is in ur LAN) and Gateway.
In the DNS tab...enter your primary and/or secondary DNS.
save and restart your networking
#service network restart
check that ur NIC is configured properly
#ifconfig eth0 <<substitute with appropriate NIC
then ping ur gateway, if successful
then ping ur DNS
