Intel 82547 on board NIC - not recognised by Knoppix OR KUbuntu

My "Intel Corp. 82547GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller" (lspci) or "Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connection" (Windows Device Manager) does not appear to be recognised in either Knoppix or Kubuntu.

My System
3.0 GHz P4 Prescott on an Abit IC7 Max III mobo with 2GB PC3200 RAM, 2 36GB WD Raptors (Raid 0 (Windows Partition)) & 1 200GB Seagate (split into 2 partitions)
1 DVD+/-RW(Dual Layer) 1 CDRW and 1 CD-ROM
GeForce FX 5950 Ultra Vid card and SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS Sound Card

In the knoppix menu I select Network configure, it tells me no cards are present. I select the PPPoE option and it gives me the module list in a debconf style window. There is nothing badged intel and both the e1000 and e100 are installed.

When I do lspci - it shows the controller at 0000:02:01.0 and the CPU to PCI to CSA bridge at 0000:00:03.0

I opened up a root console and typed modprobe e100 and/or modprobe e1000 with no luck.

Any suggestions?
