installing new card

Hi I am trying to install a network card. I have suse 10.0 below is the install instructions on a floppy, but I am very new to this and can't seem to get it to install, can you simplify this any more?
what I did was log in as root open konsole and typed cd /tmp then copied and pased (doscp a:/unixware7/fastnic.pkg /tmp
> pkgadd -d /tmp/fnic.pkg ) into konsole but it said no such directory. thanks, Adrian
oh yeh and what's the Maintenance mode?

Installation Procedure
======================

1. Login to UNIX system as supervisor (root) and enter the Maintenance mode.
(Note: Make sure that the current directory is "/"
using UNIX command - pwd.)

Please follow the following steps to copy the package file:

> cd /tmp (and inserts the package floppy in the proper drive, i.e. a
> doscp a:/unixware7/fastnic.pkg /tmp
> pkgadd -d /tmp/fnic.pkg
2. Run "netcfg". Add the desired chain. The driver will be called as
"fastnic".

3. When the chain has been configured, select 'q' from the
netcfg menu.

Erm, what kind of card are you adding to your system? Does your SuSE 10.0 system not automatically regonise your card and use it correctly without this separate package being installed? Those instructions are not aimed at your system which is why you're having a little trouble getting it working!

Looks like those instructions are for SCO unixware or something...

1. Linux does not have an "a:" drive. Linux has "/dev/fd0" for floppies.
2. pkgadd will not work on Suse.
3. netcfg and doscp do not exist under linux.
4. fnic.pkg is almost certainly a binary driver for some UNIX system (unixware, solaris?)

These instructions will not work for you, and neither will the driver (most likely)

Anyway, what kind of NIC is it? Drivers are probably built into the kernel already...
If it is physically installed then run "lspci" and look for a line "Ethernet controller"

Or just see if Yast finds it...

It's all right, we all start somewhere.

Let us know if Yast doesn't detect it. If so, post output of "lspci"...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a card in which 2.6.13 won't recognize. My LSCPI says:

02:0c.0 Ethernet controller : 3Com Coporation 3c905-TX/TX-M [Tornado] (rev 30)

What do I do next?
