installing network card on redhat9

I have redhat 9... and am a super newbie to linux... but it's totally different from windows OS.

i want to install network card(3Com 2000), so i copied the tar file and unzip and tried to compile with a command "make clean". but it says "it can't find file or directory in "/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h and /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h". i guess that i need kernel source file something.. so i downloaded "patch-2.4.22.bz2" from kernel site. should i unzip it in linux machine? if so, how should i extract it?

on 3com documentation, i have to copy file "/boot/vmlinuz.version.h", but i don't even have it...

please help... i'd really really appreciated...

so frustrated...

I'm a newbie myself, so i cannot help much... I don't think u need to patch the kernel to install u'r card, unless it's not supported. 3com 2000 card? Haven't heard of it, can u be more spesific? Anyway, to unzip the file simply type: bunzip2 <filename>
If u're lucky u'll find some install info inside

...and, 'make clean' dont install anything. I believe that only resets all the configuration files so that you can use the configuration scripts to reinstall/upgrade an earlier installation.

Anyone with more know-how plz correct me if i'm wrong. Good luck

You might look at this post which also concerns the 3comand see if it helps.
