Installed SuSE 10, can't get past router???
 

Hi everyone, I installed SuuSE 10.0 tonight, and I can not get past the router. I can only guess that the router needs reset, buy me roomies are big on WOW and in game right now, so I figured I'd post on here. We have a netgear router, and under suse, I am unable to connect to the internet via wireless or ethernet. In windows it works fine. Here's the catch...

We have reserved IP's based on mac address. Mandriva gets the reserved IP (192.168.0.4), Windows gets the reserved IP (192.168.0.4), Suse gets it's own IP even though the router is showing the same MAC in attached devices (192.168.0.7). The only difference I can see is it is not detecting the hostname of my machine. This same issue occurs on ethernet as well. I do have a network connection because I am able to ping my peers on the local network, and I can access the routers internal page to get this info. I can not ping yahoo or my routers default gateway, or ANYTHING outside of our local network. We don't have any access lists/restrictions setup in the router, and I am concerned about the fact that I cant get a hostname to show up.

Any ideas???


EDIT: Just noticed this error when I do an ifup wlan0 (incase it helps)

(it does get an IP after a few seconds)

Are you getting a default gateway assigned via DHCP?

Post the output of 'route', as it sounds like your default gateway is missing

Thanks for the reply... I don't know where to find the gateway addrss (unless route is it). I did try specifying the gateway manually via Yast as 192.168.0.1

You are onto it! I looked up how to setup a default gateway from a terminal, and I managed to get it to ping outside IP's (not domains, but I figure if I am not getting a gateway, then I am not likely getting a DNS) So how an I make Suse obtain this info without setting it up statically?

I am posting this from SuSE!!!

I opened Yast and set my ethernet adapter "Device Activation" setting to "NEVER". Now everything is happy! I read on a newsgroup somewhere that multiple NIC's causes a problem in SuSE 9.X so I tried this and all works now. Thanks!!!

P.S. Whaile this workaround is sufficient since I can easily enable/disable NIC's, I always seek the real resolution. Anybody know how to fix this? If not, no biggie.
