Question installation of network card - how???

i want to set up a firewall and router under suse linux 6.4 (probably i upgrade the system to the latest version when i've got internet access) on my old pentium 200. i installed two network cards in the machine: one d-link de530 from digital, the other one with the rtl8029 chip. both of them are PCI cards.

unfortunately i could not manage to install the network adapters.

- "ifconfig" shows only the "lo" device.
- "ifconfig eth0" gives the message "SIOSIFADDR: No such device" and "eth0: unknown interface: No such device".
- "/sbin/init.d/network restart" gives the message "Shutting down network device eth0eth0: unknown interface: No such device

according to the last message i would think that i've entered "eth0" one time too much in a configuration file.

what's wrong here? what do i have to do to get this cards running under linux? both cards worked perfectly under win*!

shlitzer. check to to see what kind/brand your network card is. go to google.com (my favorite for finding stuff =) and put in the brand name into the search engine and then do + linux. ie. i have a 3com 3c509b card. i would enter that into google and then do + linux and it *should* tell you or help you locate the module you need to load before your system recognizes you have a card.
-----
*IF* you already have the module loaded
(you can find this out by typing lsmod at the $prompt) then all you need to do is configure your system to bring the interface up at boot.
in redhat based sysrtems you can maually edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and enter in the IPADDR, NETMASK, etc. also you can tell it to come up on boot (boot=yes)
---
dont know ANYTHING about suse. never like it much ;P
hope this helps you!!

I may help you

*** Keep in mind I never used Suse ***

If /proc/pci exists check to make sure the cards are in their.

OK, if Suse uses NIC configuration file names like:

ifcfg-eth0
ifcfg-eth1
ifcfg-eth...

then first of all copy (or make) the two config files.

(i.e Id ifcfg-eth0 exists copy it to ifcfg-eth1 and change the ip, netmask, and whatever. Then activate the interfaces using ifconfig.

run ifconfig by itself, id the cards are there you are fine.

Thumbs up problem solved!

first of all: thanks for your help.

secondly: the problem is solved!

solution: there was a mechanical problem which means that whenever i installed the screw that holds the pci-card in position the card was fixed on the back side of the computer but on the front side it got out of the pci slot. --> the pc couldn't recognize the card. now i didn't install the screw --> cards are being recognized and everything works fine!

AAAARGH!!!
