input/output error when connecting to winXP machine with smbmount
Hi there - I'm able to connect to my winXP shares using smbclient and browse around fine, but when I create a directory and try to mount the same share to that directory, it connects ok, but if I try to do anything, e.g. ls the directory, there's a pause and the error message: "ls: <directoryname>: Input/output error
What could be causing this?
Thanks in advance!
Andrew

It's usually due to folder / share permissions issue. Make sure you set all file write / edit privileges explicitly.

Both the share and folder are world read/writeable... I can use the share as I like when I connect to it using smbclient, just I get the input output error when I use smbmount... is there something else I could be doing wrong?

I have found that you cannot smbmount a //server/share/directory at all, at least in fedora. You have to point basically to shares. I don't really grasp the issue, are you mounting a folder on a share? I haven't been able to do that, though I'm not so great at linux yet.

Hi, thanks for the response...
I have a windows XP machine with a share I wish to mount on a directory on my fedora machine...
I've got around the issue for the time being by setting up a share on the linux machine and moving the data from the xp machine to the fedora machine, but it isn't the best solution because I need to connect to a number of shares from my fedora machine and transferring all the data isn't possible...

Well I just had a very similar problem, and I found out i was using spaces where I should have been using commas
try
smbmount //Q/qe /mnt/qe -o username=aaron,password=poop,uid=500,gid=500,fmask=777,dmask=777,rw
replacing stuff where you need it

SOLVED!
Anyone who's having problems with fedora and samba mounting shares, the current samba binaries seem to cause problems - at least with my machine they did. The solution was to download, from samba.org, the SRPM for the latest version and rebuild. As soon as I'd installed the built rpms, it worked a treat!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions...
