Incoming emails stuck in /var/spool/mail/home/

I recently started using Suse Linux 9.2 Pro and have found that not all incoming emails reach me. Early on, I got a message that several were held up in /var/spool/mail/home/. After just two or three days, they now amount to 1.6 MB in volume. If I go to that directory, I can see the first of the emails, a message tells me there are more but I cannot find a way to get to them.

Can some kind soul out there please tell me how I can get hold of them, and preferably how I can download them to my regular email program?

I am using Mozilla Thunderbird and a Texas Instruments ethernet router. I used a trial version of Thunderbird for several months on Windows XP before I switched to Linux, and I had no problems of this sort (or any other, as far as I remember).
