Howdy peeps!
I am setting up a server for a whole department here, in order to transition away from a Windoze 2000 machine acting as a file server. So I'll be setting up SAMBA as the file/print server (obviously). The original Windoze server had a whole bunch of user accounts on it, so that end-users could "transparently" access all the shares they were entitled to (including printer shares).
So, to cut the story short, I'd like to reuse all of the SMB/Windoze password hashes already stored on the Windoze server, and import them into my smbpasswd on the replacement Linux server. Why? Simply because I don't want to force over 30 people to re-establish accounts on the new server. Am I correct to assume that the password hashes are stored in smbpasswd with an identical algorithm as in WinNT/2000/XP? That's why you need an smbpasswd in the first place, right?
I would appreciate any kinds of suggestions you might have... Thanks!
