Unhappy IMAP login failed

I need some help!

I've installed the stand-alone courier-imap server 4 times and I can't figure out what's wrong with the authentification.

I use authpwd authentification and I always get the same error from all my MUA's and when I try telnet on port 143: "Login failed, check your username and password" or something but I'm sure that I'm typing correctly my passwords and I'm not running imap over ssl.

Is there an extra step or trick to set this up?

Do you know a easy-to-follow guide about authentification with imap?

I don't know much about pam or the other authentication methods, so I don't want to mess with them till I know a little more.

My qmail pop3 server works fine.

Thanks in advance.
