ICS like in WinXP.... is there a way?

Hello, this is my first post and obviously I got a linux question

For all you's info, I have RH9.

Ok, I would like to know if RH can be configured to share the connection through a network with another computer. My computer, which has the internet connection, has 2 network cards, one connected to the cable, and the other connected to the other computer (with a crossover cable).

Please let me know

PS: I checked if this had been asked before, couldn't find any.... so if it has, please direct me

sure thing!!!

=)

you just need to configure the linux box as a router/firewall... here's some tools you could use:

http://www.shorewall.net

http://firestarter.sourceforge.net

you could also set-up a proxy cache (to speed-up web surfing and save bandwidth), but that's optional:

http://www.squid-cache.org

i hope this helps...

well, i gave it a quick look and it seemed like they were talking about pretty much the same thing: IPTables... which is what the firewall links i placed above work with... shorewall and firestarter are what we'd call "front-ends" to IPTables... they are used to make IPTables configuration less painful...

if you just want a quick and dirty way to generate a decent IPTables script for (safely) sharing your connection, check-out the Easy Firewall Generator for IPTables...

basically, you just answer some questions on the webpage, click a button, and it'll give you your customized IPTables script - ready to use...

also, you could check-out this thread if you also wanna play with squid and/or dhcp:

If you have an old 486 laying around you could just turn it into a router .
try these

www.freesco.org or www.smoothwall.org

these are both firewall/router distros that will work on older machines, you just need to network cards and you have a cheap firewall/router!
