I want to set up a web proxy on my laptop

Hi guys,

I want to set up a web proxy on my laptop so I can access the net from my cell phone without using verizon's proxy. I don't understand exactly how proxies work, but I was wondering if this is possible to set up a proxy without a domain.

Thanks guys
garrett

You don't need a proxy to get internet access, all you need is a wireless device in your laptop to allow the mobile to access the web.

A proxy is only used to cache websites, so enabling you to speed up access on frequetly visited sites, also you can use a proxy to block access to certain sites.

My understanding was that you can use a proxy to get around blocks on corporate intranets and the like. My question was can I set up a proxy without an internet domain?

Of course you can set up a proxy to test it out. You don't need a domainname for that, just that the proxy is reachable from an outside IP address. Be aware that some providers just don't like customers running services and filter common ports and in that case you might need to use another port. If you have a spare machine and a modem router that's capable of running a DMZ you could put the proxy there. That way you don't have to sacrifice your whole LAN when that machine gets abused. I doubt though it'll work. I think that when you use your GNU/Linux box (or whatever resides behind it) you use one network and when you use your cell you may be using another one. Nothing keeps an ISP from forcing traffic to go through their proxies anyway for reasons of accounting, access filtering or whatever else they fancy.
