Question I still can't get my modem to work, help!

Update on previous posting

I've got a Smart Link Aztech v92 CNR modem that won't work on Linux (it works under windows so the modem itself shouldn't be faulty)

I've downloaded the Linux modem driver from Smart Link and have installed it. The readme says that I should use /dev/ttySL0 as the modem device but it still 'failed to activate modem' when I try to activate it.

Help anyone else I'll give up on Linux as my daily op sys must use the internet! I'll get another modem if that's necessary but surely the downloaded driver should work and this should be a configuration issue.

Thanks in advance.

How are you trying to 'activate' it?

Have you followed any instruction to run a config program after installing the (presumably) .rpm?
Did you install as root? Are you trying as a normal user now?

read the install and readme files that came with your driver. also, check if you have /dev/modem. if you do try to use kppp by typing kppp in a terminal window. if it connects and at least has some dial-up noises (check this by picking up a phone) then you're in the clear. sometimes it is not neccessary to activate a modem before you use it
