I need help with DNS setup! Please!

I am currently running redhat 9.0 and using the gnome desktop. In addition I am behind a firewall and I have a private IP address. In the near future I will be moveing to a public IP and I would like to get a few issues worked ot first.

#1 currently I am trying to configure DNS with just two machines, server1, where I run the DNS service from and a work station whichis a XP box. Both of the machines have static addresses 192.168.0.1 and 2 respectfullu. I have been through DNS setup and can't seem to figure out how to configure each machine as part of ".local". I have opened a terminal and tried to ping "server1.local" and it cannot find the name.

Any help from the Linux Gods would be greatly appreciated.

DNS setup

Frank,

I'll try to give it a shot, and point you in the right direction, I'll have to do this from memory,as my main box which I run normally as red hat, I'm now running under suse 8.2 as a test. Hopefully someone with more experience will step in and correct or iron out any rough edges.

First ensure that bind-9, bind-utils, and caching-name server are installed

using bind configuration tool, I would create a Forward Master Zone of localhost.localdomain with the the SOA set to Server#1 (192.168.0.1), I would also list the FORWARD Master Zone's address as 192.168.0
Once that was set I'd add a record (right clicking on the forward master zone?)for both server #1 and Server #2

Once I've added the record's I would then add Reverse Zone Files for both Server #1 and Server #2 I would then save my changes.

next I'd edit my /etc/resolv.conf file and add

nameserver 192.168.0.1
search localhost.localdomain

afterwhich I would edit my /etc/hosts file

192.168.0.2

Activate the DNS Server

as root
ntsysv -- level 345 start
check named
service named start

Change ownerships
chmod 644 /etc/named.conf
chmod a+x /var/named

test the server
host -a computer1.localhost.localdomain
(it should show you the address in the answer section)

configure the windows computer for dns - I'll leave that to you

Hope this helps, and hopefully it point you in the right direction till someone with more experience answers

Dave S.
