I have very slow Dial Up Internet (RH9)

Ok... My Dial-Up connection used to work great, but for some reason its now VERY VERY slow! I have no idea how I can speed things up. I can Dial Out great but whenever I start up a Browser or Instant Messanger program it does not work. It seems like it's getting info out there somewhere but it takes forever and when I do get something it is a message saying "Unable to connect to server". Help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like dns hangs, check that you have
/etc/resolv.conf and nameserver <dnsserver>
try pinging gateway and nameserver.

i'm confused... ping gateway and nameserver?! I have tried to ping like http://www.yahoo.com but nothing comes back. But gateway, I'm not sure what you mean. (I'm in Windoze now, I might have to switch back and forth so I can see what all I have. ) Are there things I need to change. If it's the DNS Server how do I change that so I can get a faster DNS? Thanks in advance.

i do have /etc/resolv.conf. This is what all it says.

Search localdomain
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 198.6.1.218
nameserver 198.6.100.218

Just make sure you can ping 192.168.1.1 and
try removing the search localdomain, and see if that helps with
the hanging and "Unable to connect to server" on web browser.

192.168.1.1 is a router at work, i dont have it at home.
