Some details would help - what distro are you using? What error messages do you get? What have you done to try & fix the problem? etc.

friskydrifter 08-03-2006 04:04 AM

1. In most cases of this type the problem is with your /etc/resolv.conf file.

It needs to have the ip address of your (guess) ADSL router if it is doing DNS for your network , or your ISP's DNS Addresses.

The format of the file should be

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Heres my /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 192.168.0.254

That address is my adsl router.

2. Another problem which can be mistaken for the above is if you are using firefox for your browser and it is using ipv6
Heres a link to show u how to fix it - easy 3 steps.

http://en.opensuse.org/Disable_IPv6_for_Firefox

If that doesnt work its prolly something to do with your network settings - deal with that later if the above steps dont help.

Cheers

Hi,

I would first check if the Ethernet cable is connected and active on your OS. You can do that by looking in the "network configuration" panel. You will probably have to su and then try to check under "system-config-network" or something similar.

Cheers

I use SUSE Linux 10.1 and my NIC SiS 900 based ethernet card. I initially installed Fedoora core 5 and had the samne problem.

I suspect frisky's correct: You're using IPV6 and you need to be on IPV4

Hi,

To assist, you must provide a little more information. To just ask for help with 'I cannot access inernet from linux but ...' will get both of us no where.

For future reference you could check out the website for how to ask questions.

How are you attempting to connect, wired or wireless?

Since my crystal ball is cracked and the warranty on it has expired. Please post the output of commands via cli as root;

Code:

#dmesg |grep eth          #check what is recognized
#ifconfig -a              #get device info
#iwconfig                  #unsure what you connect with
#route -n                  #get route table
#uname -a                  #kernel ?
#lsmod                    #modules loaded

The output should be posted un-edited.

BTW, LQ has a good spell checker!

Pardon pulling up an old thread, but this just happened to me, so I'll post my own version of the requested info in hope of shedding some light (please :E).

In summary -- Also using a dual-boot machine. All is well networkwise in Windows, but as of today suddenly I have no access in Suse 10.0 (not even to the router). Network adapter is an Intel Pro/100 VE. I am not aware of any recent updates or configuration changes (though in response to the problem I have tried reconfiguring the card using YaST and editing resolv.conf manually. No harm done, but no progress).

I get the following errors at bootup:
Code:

eth0 interface could not be set up

setting up service network failed

And here are the requested outputs.

dmesg:
Code:

e100: eth0: e100_probe: addr 0xfeafc000, irq 10, MAC addr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
e100: eth0: e100_watchdog: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex
eth0: no IPv6 routers present

ifconfig -a:
Code:

You might also want to know that unplugging/replugging the router appears to have resolved whatever was wrong.
