no, of course we can't, other than guessing at some form of DNS issue. How are you doing name resolution? Why do you think you should be able to hit it my name in the first place?

When you mean the server name on a LAN then you need to edit the /etc/hosts file. Examples are in the manual pages of hosts, i.e. "man hosts".

doesn't sound like the right level of solution given it's a DL380. And we've no idea what his client OS is.

Assuming that it is some sort of Unix-like as he asks in a Linux forum. Then /etc/hosts works like this:

1)
I do a "ssh -l root 192.168.1.123" or something similar and if it works then

2)
I edit in my hosts file a line:
192.168.1.123 my_123_box

3)
Then, I should be able to do a
"ssh -l root my_123_box"

I'm looking forward to finding out the truth, but to me it's the sort of question that comes from someone having an AD domain where domain members will register themselves automatically in AD DNS and / or use NetBios calls to broadcast their name. And he's built a Linux box and it's not working like windows does. It's usually that.
