I can't connect to the internet. (DSL) (Suse 9.3 pro)

I recently installed SUSE LINUX 9.3 Pro, and I am very new to the OS. Everything went just right in the installation except for my inability to connect to the internet. My network card shows up as being recognized. I connect to the internet through a Netgear Router(RP614v2), and my router connects to the internet through a Westell Wirespeed DSL modem. (Another interesting thing I might note is that the indicator light for my computer on my router shows up as orange while all of the other indicator lights for my other computers show up as green.) I appreciate any help I can get.

The connection log looks like this:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.58 on linux.
Status is: disconnected

How did you configure your internet options when you installed suse? Usualy your ethernet card is listed as eth1 yet it looks like you are trying to connect using dsl0. If you specified that you connect to the internet with a dsl modem then it may be trying to communicate directly with the modem rather than with the router.

The light on the router may be orange because linux is ignoring your network card and trying to find an attached dsl router.

Try running ifconfig and see what interfaces you have installed

Hi,

The router may be showing orange for a lower speed connection.
My Netgear does this too.
For my old PC315 Server it connects orange (not green) because it it 10mbps and not 100mpbs.

Try and see if you can ping the router with the IP address.

So if your router is 192.168.0.1 - see if you can ping that.
Is your ip address configured with DHCP or have you assigned it as a static address (in YAST).

I was eventually able to connect to the internet by configuring the DNS service in YAST.
I was able to ping the router (so the IP network was OK) but Linux was not finding a route for DNS. I configured the local DNS service to point to my router address for anything it could not resolve itself. This worked for me.

If you think any of this is likely or useful then post here and I will tty and provide better instructions (though I am somewhat of a linux noob myself!)

Joe
