I've installed Smoothwall, but where does it go in my network?
 

I put another ethernet card in one of my computers and thought I'd try out Smoothwall. However, I've been unable to get it to work. I think my problem is that I don't know where on the network to put the firewall.

Right now, I have it between my Playstation 2 and the router. (I did have it between my Windows computer, but all that rebooting after changes really got tedious. ;))

Also, I will have to set the default gateway of the connected computer(s) to be the IP of the Green interface, right? I have been doing this, but I thought it might be that the firewall is designed to be more or less invisible on the network.

The Smoothwall box is usually the first one off the internet connection... Your ISP connection goes to your Smoothie red card, then your Smoothie green card connects to your local hub. All your other computers connect to the hub, and get to the internet through the Smoothie.

Your red card is usually set to get a dynamic IP from your ISP. Your green card is usually set to 192.168.0.1. All your other computers get an internal IP of 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.254. They also have the gateway set to 192.168.0.1 to get to the Smoothie.

A smoothwall configured PC would be just like your existing hardware router. You would use the smoothwall PC instead of the router.
