Http Tunneling without CONNECT

The CONNECT command on our proxy was recently banned. This created a situation where windows yahoo messenger was working but linux yahoo messenger was not working as proxy authentication is not supported. Other clients like GAIM and AYTTM/libyahoo2 were refused as they tried using CONNECT.

Why it is the case that yahoo messenger is not using CONNECT command but GAIM and AYTTM are using that? Can we convert a CONNECT request into a request that can pass through a proxy banning CONNECT? I thought of modifying GAIM/ Ayttm code but do not have much clue about the protocol behind communication with Proxy.

TIA,
PYMehta
