how winsocks is functioning?


hello, i just wan to know how winsocks is functioning? what is the port is opened when a winsocks proxy is installed?
i am quite curious... how come, whenever a winsocks proxy is installed and allow a certain services like smtp and pop3, and then, i nmap those machine... at the end i still cant detect the port opened for pop3 or smtp?
how windows plays around with this? pls explain..... thanks
