netstat is for IP connectivity. it knows nothing at all about the protocols, so can't tell you what you now apparently awnt to know. the fact that the netstat output is static is really quite quite irrelelvant.... just run it again, or run it through "watch" and there you go.. dynamic. still doesn't seem to be what you want in the slightest though
I don't really use Samba here much (only 1 WinXP client, and they're not even here right now), but try smbstatus at the command line. It should show you some more information. I'd also look at 'man smbstatus' to see if there are not some more options you may be interested in.
I do not think there are many OSS (read: free) projects out there to allow you to manage this. There are some commercial packages that offer at least some of the features you want.
