Quote:
ps aux | grep [n]amed
Quote:
lsof -i :53
Both the above commands will tell you whether named is running or not.

In Redhat you can also use the init script to check the status of a daemon,

Quote:
/etc/init.d/named status

Please note several things:
  • Checking whether named is running is not the same as checking whether named is configured correctly
  • Checking whether named is running is not the same as checking whether DNS is configured correctly for what you want to do
  • DNS may be configured correctly even if named is not running
so be sure that you've asked the right question!
