Question How to use the dual monitor in 'Multiple X Screens'

Hi,

I have setup xorg.conf for 'Multiple X Screens' following the nvidia manual (http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-p.html).

It is working fine but now how do I move/open an application in this second screen? The screen just shows my desktop-image and I can move my mouse to the screen but that's all.

Cheers, Ronald

I had to reread the top couple sentences there a few times before I realized it means the opposite of what you might think on first glance.

It means the setup method described on that page does not allow dragging or expanding windows between monitors.

There are three different methods to setup dual monitors
1) The method desribed on that page
2) Twinview
3) Xinerama

Each has serious flaws the other two avoid. There is no way to get the best of each.

Probably you want Twinview (see the link from that page). Maybe you want Xinerama.

If you really want seperate X screens (the ability to open applications on the second screen with no ability to move applications between screens) I don't know enough to guess why it wouldn't be obvious how to open applications on the second screen. When I setup dual monitors that way, opening applications on the second screen was obvious. Which desktop manager are you using?

I using gdm/gnome (Ubuntu 7.10)

The reason not to choose twinview is that the second monitor is a tv which does not handle the resolution my lcd does (1240x800). And thus I need to go for a lower resolution (vague display) AND above all if my TV is not connected I need to edit my xorg.conf to set it back to 1280x800. :-(

Sorry I'm a bit lazy....

Anyway that's why i'm trying the multiple x screen option.

Cheers, ROnald

DISPLAY environment variable

When you're using multiple X screens, the screen an application opens on is determined by the DISPLAY environment variable. If you're running an xterm on screen 0, it's DISPLAY variable will be set to :0.0. So when you run xclock, it will open on screen 0. If you want xclock to open on screen 1, you could

Code:
export DISPLAY=:0.1
xclock
The number after the decimal is the screen number a window will open on.

You could change a gnome launcher to open an application on another screen with a target like

Code:
DISPLAY=:0.<desired screen> <command>
I don't know how to move an application to a different screen once it's started.
