how to troubleshoot network speed?

mandriva user here. not an admin by any means but i can muddle
through with help.

i have a small network set up to process timelapse photos i've
been shooting. i capture on an xp box and use a small mandriva
box as an admin station between the xp box and a couple of
other mandriva boxes which do the processing.

i have samba set up on all of the mandriva boxes. on the mandriva
admin box, i log into all the others and copy files to the
processing boxes from the xp box.

it's a gigabit network but my transfers seem very slow. how
would i begin to troubleshoot the speed issue?

one bit of info, there is also a macpro in the network. when i
manually grab files using the macpro, the speeds seem much better.
the transfers are handled by a bash script when initiated from
the mandriva admin box.

the admin box is an old p3 i think.
the processing boxes are all p4's

all have matching trendnet gigabit ethernet cards.

thanks for any tips on how to get started sorting out the
bottlenecks here,

this could be an application problem (samba) or a network issue. verify the network first using a tool like netperf or iperf. If you get good results there, then try playing with the samba directive
socket options = TCP_NODELAY
(for example, comment it out)
