how to setup samba for winxp/linux networking
Hi,
I'm running dekstop with FC4, and I have a LAN connected through an ADSL modem with built in router and having trouble setting up samba in it. This is the case: I want to setup my desktop as a samba server so I can access it thru my winXp laptop. I've tried all instruction that I found from LQ but my Linux desktop still not appearing on my winxp laptop. Everything work fine if both run winxp thou. This is what I've tried: run system setting->server setting->samba, add folder to be shared, restarting smb services. I also tried to ping my desktop from my laptop, but dunno how to find the IP address on linux. Here is my smb.conf file, please help! thx (sorry if it's too long, i'm a linux noob & dunno how to use grep) Code:
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the |
set the security = _____ field to share and I bet it will work, assuming that smbd is started. You could set it to user, but then you'd have to add and map users which adds a layer of complexity.

I've tried that, and somehow I've figured it out. What I did is typing my linux ip address on my windows, and it pop-up. But I still face some problem, the file transfer only goes 1 way, I only can transfer file from my windows to linux, not the other way. I've tried to set share permission through samba configuration (checked Visible and Writable options), tried chmod 777 all files that are shared, but still it says 'you don't have permission blahblah..' when I tried to copy it in windows. The only folder I can access from windows is /tmp and everything I put there from my Linux doesn't appear in Windows (but it works the other way). Any ideas?
