How to setup "NETWORK" in ifcfg-XXX file?

When using the ifconfig command, it can setup ip, subnet
but how to setup the "NETWORK" address in ifcfg-XXX by command mode ?

NETWORK is necessary ? can i delete it from ifcfg-XXX file ?
or calculate it by ifconfig itself ?

from what I know just put it in to be safe..Not sure if it is absolutely necessary. anyway,if you want to setup your network properly go and add all the settings in the ifcfg files..the ifconfig xxx is more for quick setup if you want to change ip's for testing and such..when you reboot your machine it takes the settings from the ifcfg files.
