How to setup DNS on a VPS ?

I have never really dealt with DNS before so I am a little confued with this.. I have a domain name registered at godaddy.com, and I was wondering how do I transfer it to a VPS that I have. Godaddy has a place to enter in the new name servers, but I'm not sure what to put there. The place I got the VPS from says to put in something like ns1.yourdomain.com, and ns2.yourdomain.com. How would godaddy know where ns1.mydomian.com is if there is no DNS on it to point to the servers IP? Would I have to setup bind my the VPS first then enter in the VPS's IP address for the name server at godaddy?

You have to register a new name server. The website that you registered the domain with should give you the ability to register a name server. That is where you specify that x.x.x.x should resolve to ns1.yourdomain.com. After a few days (usually) the internet name servers will all get updated with your DNS server's info.

There is a place to enter name servers, but I don't see how adding ns1.mydomain.com into there will do anything, because there is no current DNS server at ns1.mydomain.com.

Would I have to setup bind on my server and enter in the servers IP address for the name servers?

Its okay that you do not have DNS running yet. You'll need to register the two IP addresses as names servers before you can use them as your domains ns servers. I too use GoDaddy and that is the correct place to insert your IP's. You'll get an email anywhere from 24 to 72 hours later letting you know that the IP addresses were registered. Once that has happened you can then put in, ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com, to act as your name servers.

Next would be configuring DNS on your VPS. What Linux distro are you using? Were you given a control panel or just shell access? If you have control panel access is it CPanel, Plesk or another? They are all able to configure your DNS through them.

I would only use shell access and command line tools if a contol panel is unavailable.

I only have one IP address on the server. Do I enter it twice?

Its Debian, and I only have shell access.

I tried putting in the IP of my server into Custom Name Servers box and a get a error saying

Please correct the following issue(s):


Nameserver 1 contains an invalid character.
Nameserver 2 contains an invalid character.

Hmmm. Not sure what the issue is with your GoDaddy part. Did you put the IP in and then the name of your name server, ex: NS1 in the text field next to HOST: and then the IP address. Make sure you inputing only valid number characters for the IP and only alphanumeric in the host.

I put the IP address of my server under the "Set Namerservers" section in this box then clicked save changes.

I'm not seeing any "host" section.

Ahhh, click on your domain name on the left hand side. Then on the very bottom of the right hand side is a tab labled "Domain Host Summary". Click on the link specified to register new name servers, as I already have some my link says "Click here to see details or to modify." The new screen is where you can register your IP address as a name server.
