how to setup a web trap? (don't know the proper term)

Hi,

The idea I'm thinking of is similar to an airport's or coffee shop's wifi network, where they redirect you to a login page the first time you sign into their network. A few questions about this setup:

1. What's it called?

2. How is it implemented normally? I was thinking about using HTTP redirects, but I don't think that's how it's setup normally.

Thanks!

Thanks for the swift reply.

Do you happen to know of a way to implement a captive portal in tools already available on most Linux distros? Like a combination of apache and iptables, that sort of thing.
