How to see used IP-s from a range

Let say i want to log in into another machine through ssh , being in the same local net, both, my machine and that one getting the IP through DHCP. How do i find the other machine remotely (through the net) if I do not want to ping manually all the IPs in the range the DHCP can give to the machines? Is there a linux command to see used IP-s from a range? Thanks!!! M.

Use nmap
Code:
 ~ $ nmap -sP 192.168.2.0/24

Starting Nmap 4.01 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2006-11-06 18:17 EST
Host (192.168.2.1) appears to be up.
Host (192.168.2.10) appears to be up.
Host (192.168.2.150) appears to be up.
Nmap finished: 256 IP addresses (3 hosts up) scanned in 2.942 seconds

You can broadcast ping and see what IPs reply. Check -b option for ping.

Or better yet, if you're running your own DNS server, you can get dhcpd and named to work together on updating host records with new ips each time they changes.
