How to scan network for active IP's?

Hi, On my (web access based) router there is a page thta allows me to view all connected computers (or network printers or xbox's etc). How can I do this. The reason I would like to do this is because I'm writing a script that will scan my network, then report all the computers that are active (this is for a web-based network administration system I'm designing).

Any ideas or info would be great, buck

Not quite sure what you're asking. Is it how to get the page or is it how do you perform a similar function in Linux?

You can get the page by using lynx or curl (or any other text browser) to dump it for your script.

On the Linux box itself you can see active connections with "netstat -a". You can also use "lsof -i" - this will show not only the IPs and ports in use but also show you which process they are associated with.

External to the box you can run port scans from other systems to see what they detect open on it.
