How to Q: Win2k box to see Linux Box

Okay:

First the good news:
Linux is up and running. I think I'm over the hump on Samba -- computers can "see" one another. I am well on the way to absolving my life of M$.

Linux/Samba box to Win2k box Question(s).
I'm on a workgroup.

1. I need to tell my win2k box that I can access the files on the Windows box. From the Linux box, I can definately poke around on my Windows box and at least see the directories. I cannot, however, go from my Windows box to my Linux/Samba box. Is this sort of thing usually addressed in the smb.conf file? (Like I think it is).

2. From my linux/samba box, I can get into the directories on my windows box, but I can't actually open any of the files. I've set the directory in question to fully shared, where everyone gets rights to poke around, open, modify etc. I'm assuming I have to do some sort of chmod thing, but for the life of me, I'm striking out finding out what this might be.

Thanks in advance for the help. Life is good.

For anyone doing a search and stumbles accross this post: "Using Samba" published by O'Relly is awesome. I'm stuck on these two issues obviously, but that book has been...awesome. There are probably 875 posts I've NOT posted because of that book. Highly reccomended guys.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

hello welcome to linux

1. i think you are refering to the 'shares' ( as windows calls them ) on linux ( ? )

if you are, you are correct, you smb.conf file is the key, you can be brave and put jus the basic in the file:

Code:
[share_name]
path=/path/to/where_ever

or you can look in to something like swat or webmin ( recommended and very useful ) you can fine tune your share for example permissions and stuff

you you can trall through the samba manual and howtos ( www.tldp.org ) and learn it ( if you have some time on your hands ) but i do recommend learning it, its very useful at times.

2. your win2k box probably does not have the propper permissions set on the share or files, i think its just right click and then security and set you permissions up. there is also share permissions too it may be worth checking those out

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually trying to slog my way through this to learn Samba fully. It'll take some effort no doubt, but I want to know that the heck I'm doing.
